Tucson Supplies Teachers

As we move into year four of Tucson Supplies Teachers, we are very excited about the success of this program. Many Southern Arizona teachers are forced to buy school supplies with their own money, a dilemma that's now the focus of a regional initiative involving local businesses and organizations.

Tucson Values Teachers is once againg working with Walgreens stores throughout Pima County, Sierra Vista and Nogales to host the fourth annual Tucson Supplies Teachers campaign. Each store will stock collection boxes from July 30 through August 13 for the community to drop off items such as notebooks, pencils and crayons.

This year, TVT has set a goal to collect $110,000 in school supplies that will be distributed to all district, private and charter schools in Southern Arizona. Last year the two-week campaign collected $102,000 in supplies, which grew from $71,000 in 2010 and $21,000 in 2009.

The Tucson-based, non-profit Community Finance Corporation has kick-started the drive the last two years with a $25,000 grant that was used to purchase supplies and was matched by Walgreens.

More than 10,000 teachers at public, private and charter schools will receive the supply drive donations. "These donations are a tremendous gift to our teachers. The efforts of Tucson Values Teachers, Walgreens, local businesses and the community through this campaign make an incredibly significant impact in Tucson classrooms," said Maggie Shafer, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools of Tucson Unified School District.
