Teacher Excellence Award Winners

Kathy Moore, November 2020 Teacher Excellence Award Winner

Tucson Values Teachers (TVT) presented the November Teacher Excellence Award on Tuesday, Dec. 1 to Kathy Moore, a science and math teacher at City High School.

Moore was nominated by a fellow City High School teacher, Annie Holub. In her nominating statement, Holub said, “Students come from all over the city to City High and show up with a wide variety of math and science skills and knowledge, and Kathy somehow meets each student where they’re at and always promotes a growth-mindset approach.

“With the shift to remote learning, Kathy spent all summer learning best practices and even created a bitmoji classroom and class website that parents can also access for help and support. On top of all of the work she does each day for her students, Kathy is patient, kind, and creative. She’s always working to make her math and science lessons anti-racist and focus on social justice. I wish I had had math teachers like her when I was a student. I’d probably feel a lot more confident in my math skills.”

Tucson Values Teachers spotlights quality Southern Arizona teachers every month. Teachers are nominated through Tucson Values Teachers’ website by colleagues, students, friends, and other community members. Winners of the Teacher Excellence Award receive $250 cash courtesy of Helios Education Foundation, a $100 gift card for classroom materials, and flowers.
